Also, it does feel like this movie tries to mimic Shrek a lot of the time. It even opens and closes with a book opening/closing just like the Shrek movies, which is ironic because Shrek was made out of spite against Disney. Ummm… do you not realize that Disney did the opening storybook thing FIRST? Have you never watched Snow White, Cinderella, or Sleeping Beauty?

Been so LONG since I've seen those Disney classics.

Been so LONG since I've seen those Disney classics. I think that’s part of the problem with how people are perceiving Wish. That they’ve forgotten what Disney’s classic movies were like, especially the Walt-era movies.

Yes, I indeed realized this afterwards, for some reason Shrek is what immediately came to mind.

Brutal performance, it might've even out-bombed The Marvels!

Wonder if audiences are catching on Disney's bullshit lately. Can't be a coincidence that so many of their movies have been bombing.

4 months, I'm surprised they waited this long.

This movie had such an awkward release window. I know it got pushed back because of the pandemic, THEN they had to face a strike. On top of all that, it was Disney's 100th birthday.

So.... When I first saw this back in November, I claimed that it was the definition of a fine movie. Seemingly I was in an overly generous mood that day (I did happen to see it in a double bill with The Marvels) because after rewatch my opinion has regressed substantially, it really isn't that good. The plot makes almost no sense if one stops to think about it, it feels like a mash-up of unfinished half-baked ideas and other ideas lifted from better movies. Asha and Magnifico have some charm and personality largely due to committed voice acting, but their motivations aren't fleshed out very well. Everyone else is a group of non-entities with no real personality traits. The attempts to be emotional and sincere come across as forced and awkward, and some of the dialogue is pretty rough. There are 1 or 2 decent songs, but the rest feel more like an imitation of Disney music rather than the real thing (not surprising given the songwriters' track record). I still think the animation looks rather nice, the star can be quite cute, and as mentioned the voice acting is generally good. It's superficially watchable, but there's very little beneath the surface, this film has no distinct identity.
Also, I've now watched Nimona (twice), and it's embarrassing how much better in every way the film Disney tried to bury is compared to Disney's big 100th anniversary celebration. Nimona has an actual compelling story, genuine emotion, passion and creativity on display, and a well rounded and lovable lead character. Wish has pretty much none of that, Disney had no excuses to not make something better for their 100th anniversary, they've made really good animated movies before.
I think I gave this a 6.5/10 originally, now I'd probably give it a 5/10, I still don't hate it like some people do but it's the definition of mediocrity.

It is not awful, its just I don't get the concept at all. Is there something about Southern Europe/Northen Africa that I don't know about? Because we all know Disney loves to make movies about other people's cultures. Aladden, The Princess Frog, Coco, etc. But Wish is too obscure to relate, despite my ancestors being southern european. Also villain was too over the top and the music were not memorable.
5/10
