Screenshots and specific details of what isn't working right. It's difficult to pinpoint when no-one else is experiencing those issues and/or have made those issues known.

I see the issue. Essentially, the shoutbox "buttons" are showing only in text form; they haven't been able to load the corresponding button images. This has not been an issue that has occured to me. There is the possibility it could be a ProBoards issue, as there have been various web server error page redirects over the past few days.
My only suggestion could be to press ctrl+shift+del in your browser on the website, and uncheck all the boxes except for "cache", and clear the website cache. Then refresh and see if the problem still persists.

Try my method above with the cache clearing. Clearing cookies might help also.

Is there a way to have threads stop showing up in participated? It only shows threads, but you can disable it.

Believe me when I say there are a great many plugins this board would be great to have. Unfortunately, I don't have access to plugins in order to install them. For that I'd have to become an administrator. But yes, In my attempt to make the site a little better I've come across some cool plugins that'd be amazing to have implemented, including but not limited to the ones you've mentioned.
