The pinnacle of any profession is being able to sell yourself on name recognition alone. A poster and some press coverage, and it'll probably open at #1 in Japan.
Whether he'll beat Suzume is an open question. I believe Shinkai has been Japan's top-grossing animation director over the past decade.
