So Frank was kind of upset about Star Wars. www.cbr.com/how-frank-herbert-felt-about-star-wars-dune-influence/#:~:text=He%20wasn%27t%20shy,said%20and%20why. He wasn't shy about his opinions, though he could occasionally be cryptic with them. It's clear that the trilogy's riff on his content bothered him to the point where he dismissed them as a cheap knock-off. He even accused Star Wars creator George Lucas of plagiarism, though that may be more the author's ego talking than any viable creative claim. His feelings are clear, but the reasons for them are much more complicated. As Dune: Part Two moves closer to release, it's worth clarifying what Herbert said and why.

Early criticism of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope was surprisingly strong among established "serious" science fiction authors. For instance, in his collection, Harlan Ellison's Watching, noted crank Ellison included an essay entitled "Luke Skywalker Is a Nerd and Darth Vader Sucks Runny Eggs." He parroted a lot of critiques of the movie at the time, condemning it as empty spectacle collected from bits and pieces of earlier science fiction.
