After watching quite a fair amount of anime shows, there seems to be something that I just don't understand; characters, namely older guys that either seem intent on finding and marrying a younger girl (sometimes they are still in school, sometimes they are way too young to have even begun school..) and I've even seen one character that was only obsessed with little girls that could only just walk and were still learning how to talk.
When watching these shows I try not to put down the anime as a whole for the inclusion of these characters, because I assume it is some sort of sick cultural difference (like how China eats anything from insects to dogs). However it doesn't alter that I find it bizzare that these characters HAVE to be included at all.
What do these creators think.. "This show of mine is missing something to make it a success.. ah, it needs a child predator!". Honestly, Japanese aren't all as smart as everyone makes them out to be.

Master Roshi from Dragon Ball is kinda a paedophile. His creepyness is heavily toned down in Dragonball Evolution, though. That's why that scene where Bulma finds Roshi's naughty mag is there as a nod. It also helps that Bulma is a lot older in that movie as well.

I've mentioned it in the Velma thread, but the anime Gungrave has 2 young women get with older men, one of them even having a child with the oldest guy. There are some great anime shows but these types of characters/story choices can drag it down.

I think it has to do with Japan's loose paedophilia laws. They don't see it as a big deal as long it is an animated character. I love Japanese culture, but their sexuality is weird.

Which is ironic considering that they find incest taboo. So if she's young it's ok but if she's your long lost cousin then it isn't.

Currently watching Ranma 1/2 each night. The character "Master Happosai" has extreme pedophile tendencies. I'm not quite up to episode 50 yet, but already he steals womens bras and underwear and needs to grope girls butts, plant his face in womens breasts and also try to spy on young naked women in public baths/hot springs etc. He also shows lack of interest at all for naked women of older age or more to his own age, he doesn't even want to go near them unless they are extremely young.
Of course the other characters hit him and express relatively mild yet the correct outrage for it, but still.
Not a character I like at all. However, I suppose it depicts what can happen in real life and as such it can prepare women in real life to avoid these people or ward against them.

Now I'm wondering how old Tuxedo Mask was in Sailor Moon. I remember there was an episode where Sailor Moon's parents were concered how old Tuxedo Mask was, and then Tuxedo Mask quickly runs away. I know Sailor Moon is around 14 I think. Tuxedo Mask looked like he was old enough live alone and take care of himself. Also Japan wasn't so strict with age gaps at that time.

IIRC he and Sailor Moon are reincarnations of 2 lovers who used to live on the moon, and I'm not sure if they were royalty as well. It doesn't surprise me, but at least if the age isn't stated, Tuxedo Mask still looks like he could be a young teen. At least he's not drawn as middle aged or as an old pensioner in his 80s.

I completely forgot about this scene. But yeah, Oolong is also another creep in Dragon Ball. Or at least he use to be anyway. They toned him down later on in the franchise. What is even more creepy are his abilities since he can shape-shift, and it is hinted like once or twice that he toys around with the idea of taking advantage. Like this scene right here... Oolong as Bulma. By the way, Bulma was underage during this era.
