Man I tell you, I keep hearing about Dragonball Z everywhere, yet the only media I've ever actually interacted with of it is the Dragonball Evolution movie (which I admittedly enjoyed, it's a guilty pleasure). I probably should give the anime a go at some point. I mean it's right in my wheelhouse, 80s/90s anime.

Dragon Ball Z is tricky to recommend. Not because it's a mixed bag, that's not the case, but because I can't really pin point where you should start off. Most people will tell you the first episode of Dragon Ball Z of course. Problem is, Dragon Ball Z is a sequel to Dragon Ball. You can make the argument that Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z is all one story, because that's how it was in the manga. But once the Saiyans arrive on earth, that's when they added the "Z" because the franchise became tonally different at the point with more stakes, violence and sci-fi concepts. Where as the original Dragon Ball, it was more of an fantasy adventure comedy. Though, by the end of Dragon Ball you do see the transition to "Z". So if you want the complete story, you have to watch both Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z.
You don't have to see Dragon Ball GT. They changed the timelines anyway DC and Marvel style. As for Dragon Ball Super, haven't finished it yet.

If it's something that's hard to pinpoint I tend to revert to release order by default. Might try it eventually.

No, it's that hard. I'm just being a fanboy is all. But seriously, if you wonder why Piccolo hates Goku on the first episode of Z, its because, well, its obvious. Or the Red Ribbon Army (Dragon Ball's HYDRA) returning. But Red Ribbon Army always comes back in every damn thing. They are even the villains in that trailer above. But you won't be confused at all. I just meant you won't be following the story in chronological order starting with Z, but that's okay. Most of us got into Z first anyway, then started to watch the original Dragon Ball afterwards. In case you do that at some point, be prepared for the tonal shifts.
I also got to mention, be carful with the Dragon Ball Z anime movies because there have MAJOR continuity issues. Maybe except for the first one, Dead Zone. But most of them make no fucking sense within the timeline. I recommend the Dragon Ball Z anime movies as well, but don't go into them thinking they are canon. Otherwise, you'll end up like Black Bolt.

I'll probably do Dragon Ball first then go to Z, I'll double check what has been released when I am about to binge it so I can prepare which seasons to do first. Organizing should be easy enough. As for movies, I usually skip those, I only recently watched the movies with Sword Art Online but I don't do that for all animes.

Oh shit! Forgot to mention. You have two options to watch Dragon Ball Z. Regular Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Kai. What's the difference? Dragon Ball Kai is a remastered version of Dragon Ball Z. With better pacing and script closer to the manga. The down side is, you're going to be missing on a shit TON of scenes and episodes from regular Dragon Ball Z. But it's scenes and episodes that were never in the manga anyway.
Which one is better? I don't know if it's the nostalgia in me, but regular Dragon Ball Z. Don't give a shit if Kai is more faithful to the manga. They reusing the same footage (only remastered) and mixing it with some very distracting new animation. They should have did a full remake instead. Still, Kai is an interesting experiment. If you get tired of the fillers and pacing, consider Kai a try instead.

When it comes to watching stuff I mostly prefer the original over the remake, so I'll just go with the original, probably.

Now that I think about it, Dr. Gero is a lot like Robotnik actually.

For some reason, out of all days, people are NOW starting to realize that Disney has the US distribution rights to Dragon Ball. Coincidently, the creator of Dragon Ball was influenced by 101 Dalmatians.
