Saw the trailer for this in front of Ant Man. It looked pretty fun! We don't get enough fantasy movies.

Overall I liked the movie. Never really known much about or ever played Dungeons & Dragons but this movie works pretty well on its own terms. Was a bit disappointed when I heard there was a cameo in the movie and it only turned out to be Bradley Cooper. Kinda expected someone better, but still it was alright. Cast were decent, soundtrack was okay. Editing and pacing were fine, didn't feel like it dragged anywhere. Only nitpick would be with the writing. The "romance" with Doric & Simon felt forced to me and the revival of Holga after her death also felt a bit forced. Giving her quick flashbacks to try to quickly give her the emotional depth of her raising the girl to make up for her resurrection felt shoved in there. Would've been better had that been given more time to breathe over a longer period of time, perhaps earlier in the movie. Didn't help that her character doesn't really show any emotion, it was difficult to connect with her to warrant caring for her return from death. Didn't much care for the Father/Daughter dynamic either. Not sure if the issue was with Chris Pine or the actress who plays the girl but there's a lack of true emotion that makes it hard to be believable, at least to me personally. Aside from that it was a decent fantasy movie. I'd give it a 3/5. |

Going to see this today, originally this was a "wait for streaming release" for me, but the great reviews won me over, so hopefully it's really good.

Maybe just a bit overhyped but still pretty enjoyable. The leads were well cast and have solid chemistry, the action scenes are exciting and creative and don't feel stale, the pacing is mostly solid though it maybe dragged just a little at times. There are some pretty funny scenes (the graveyard scene is great), although the humor is perhaps just a little overdone. The main villain also is a bit generic and underdeveloped. Overall a good time though and worth seeing on the big screen. Voted 4 stars but I'd give it a 3.75/5

Well, that was fun enough. Definitly felt a bit shortened but was overall good.

Luckily the first stands on its own fairly well, but I'd still be open to a sequel.
