The Flash I think is a little better honestly.

Without revealing the leaks, Helena might get more hate than Willie, though. Some fans can already smell it from far away. They are just waiting for the movie to be officially release then they will make their attack.

I am so over the "old legacy hero is a broken and depressed recluse" trend. It didn't work with Luke Skywalker in TLJ, it didn't work with Keaton's Batman in The Flash, and it doesn't work here. FUCKING STOP DOING THAT!!!! Maverick was sad and vulnerable when he needed to be while still keeping the spirit of his character intact, how does that movie manage to get it so right while everything else gets it so wrong??? Good lord.

I need to see Indy 5 for full context because the whole "broken hero" element can work at times. Like Logan for example. But yeah, the ones like Luke Skywalker was so botched.

If I have to describe this movie, it's like a checklist of the Indy formula but without any of the charm or what makes it different from other franchises. Maybe they shouldn't have made this without Spielberg!

Disney plays things way too safe to the point where it is starting to hurt them.

Idk why but Mangold isn't that good with action. The opening is cool but it goes on for too long. Every chase after it was super forgettable. Can't believe I'm saying this but JJ might have done a better job aping Spielberg at least!

Even if JJ does do a better job with Spielberg's style, still wouldn't want him for Indy 5. The guy has too much of a producer mentally. So does Spielberg, but Spielberg still thinks outside the box. JJ can't do that. His directing style feels too artifical.

James Mangold is a really good and versatile director, but I think he bit off more than he could chew, trying to juggle so many big setpieces that just feel tedious (other than the solid opening). I can watch the prologue as its own short film, it's a nice companion piece to the originals, the rest of this movie can go to hell.

Back from vacation, and caught this movie in the theater while I was there.
I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. It is a serviceable enough Indy adventure but it just lacks that flair. Perhaps it's because Spielberg took his influences from old pulp stuff and that reflected in the older Indy movies, and it lacks here. It also lacks young Indy's natural acting mannerisms, doesn't help that he doesn't talk much and isn't very expressive with his face, but I'll chalk that up to de-aging technology still not being perfect. However, that doesn't excuse young Indy's voice. That was actually jarring and at times it didn't even sound like Ford, so in a way I'm glad he didn't speak much, but as I said, there isn't much facial expressiveness to make up for the silence either. But the young Indy segment looked stunning, I'll give it that.
Now to address the elephant in the room: Helena. Honestly, nowhere near as bad as people made her out to be. In fact I actually liked her character and found myself actually thinking Indy was more cantankerous than he was in older films. Much easier character to like than Willie from Temple of Doom.
The ending, I liked it (prior to blackout) but I disliked that it ended so abruptly cutting to black, only then to have THAT cameo happen, and honestly, kinda didn't like it after the blackout happens, because once THAT cameo happens, and the characters get together and re-enact that thing from the older film in reverse, it made me cringe because I was basically looking at old people. I guess it unlocked a feeling I never knew was possible (as I never felt it with Crystal Skull), a feeling like these characters really are too far past their prime to be in an Indy movie.
You know, say what you want about Crystal Skull but it didn't feel the need to force characters into a small cameo at the end of the movie like Luke in The Force Awakens, and instead made said person part of the actual story as a whole, so the ending to Crystal Skull was emotionally earned.
And for a John Williams Indy score, quite a few tracks were forgettable. That's not to say there aren't some memorable tracks in there, but the memorable ones are few and far between. But they were serviceable, and that's alright enough.
Not the best Indy movie, but not the worst either. I'd accept the flaws of the movie for one change: to fix young Indy's voice at the very least. No mannerisms? Fine. But the technology exists to make a voice sound good. Heck they made Mark Hamill sound young again in Book of Boba Fett, so it perplexes me as to why they could not apply that technology here to Ford.
3/5. Crystal Skull is still the better movie IMO, but on the flip side, Temple of Doom is still the worse movie.

Harrion Ford has been like that in recent years. Kinda like what happened to Bruce Willis. It seems like as you get old, you kinda lose that natural wise-ass human reaction when you're younger. When you're old you start to go, "get off my lawn" kinda behavior.

To each their own and all that, but I genuinely can't fathom thinking this is better than Temple or Crusade like I've heard some people say. The Willie character from ToD can get annoying at times (but she doesn't ruin that movie for me either), but Helena especially gets under my skin because she is so abrasive and condescending for about 2/3rds of the movie, I get that's kind of the point, but it means that I didn't buy them trying to redeem her by the end, and when she and Indy become friends (sort of?). Plus her attempts to be quirky and funny don't work for me. And good God this movie is POINTLESS! Crystal Skull ends with Indy and Marion getting back together, and this movie also ends with them getting back together. It serves no purpose other than having Indy suffer and be sad and be a grouch and get talked down to for 2.5 hours, with a duct taped on happy ending because "OOOOOH MEMBER THIS?" Not since Thor 4 a year ago has a movie made my blood boil this much, and even that movie it took a minute for me to really start despising it. After just one viewing, I'd rather go to the dentist than watch this garbage again, other than the opening sequence. Edit: oh, I forgot about Halloween Ends, nah that movie doesn't exist.

Oh look, SWIA is overreacting like a baby over an OK film and acting like it's the spawn of Satan once more........... Seriously, this wasn't that bad and Indy being depressed actually works a bit here rather than TLJ. I actually got what they were going for in the ending (Indy seeing that he still has family that cares for him rather than being so focused on the family that he lost), it's just a bit rushed is all.
I will say I loved the time travel aspect. The idea of Nazis flying across the sea shooting up Roman Legionaries is so gloriously insane in a 30's serial way.
7/10
