Oh! Just found out that the director for this is the same one who directed Lupin III: The First. I have the steelbook on Blu-ray. Don't care what anyone says, Lupin III: The First > The Castle of Cagliostro. Lupin was kinda too nice in The Castle of Cagliostro.

So, Minus One is going to prime video worldwide or just Japan?

So, Minus One is going to prime video worldwide or just Japan? Japan. Nothing about the US and UK so far. Still, it gives us an idea on when and where it might end up in western countries. Hope I'm wrong since I don't have Prime and rather get this on physical anyway.

I can totally see Criterion releasing this. They LOVE Godzilla and Japan. Criterion are even releasing Perfect Days this summer, which is also another Japanese film nominated for an Oscar this year. So Godzilla Minues One isn't too far fetched. It just all depends how determine other studios are willing to get their hands on this and how good their edition will be. Because Criterion don't even bother doing their own editions if there isn't much anything new they can offer.

I finally watched this film and I gotta say.... A little overrated. Now don't get me wrong, it's a good movie for sure with some really stunning scenes. The film excels at making Godzilla a frightening presence, every scene with him is gripping and super tense. What they pulled off here on a shoestring budget is no doubt a technical achievement and worthy of the Oscar win, it's obviously not as flashy as something like GxK, but it's more visceral and impactful (yeah I know I said earlier that they shouldn't be compared). As serious in tone as it is, this still maintains a sense of optimism which is appreciated. Yes, I wish I'd seen this in theaters, but the early December release window is probably the worst possible time for me to go to the theater. To be honest though, I still wasn't all that invested in the human drama here. Although his motivations are clear, I think the main character Koichi is rather bland and distant, the melodrama can get a bit heavy-handed, and the ending reveal that Noriko actually survived Godzilla's rampage undercut that very impactful scene from earlier. For me these issues ultimately downgrade this from a great film to one that flirts with greatness. 7.5/10 (rounded to 4 in the poll)

Funimation is gone, though. It will probably be a company like Shout! Factory. Their releases isn't as fancy as it use to be, but they get the job done. I can also see Criterion putting it out, though I wouldn't hold my breath. Criterion are kinda picky. Don't know about Arrow. Their main focus is cult favorites. Possible that WB could release this, only because they have the Monsterverse.

Relatively high demand + lack of availability = high piracy rates
I didn't download the movie, admittedly I streamed it on a site that I've watched a handful of titles on before.

It's crazy how right Steve Jobs was about piracy more than 20 years ago.

I heard this movie has no English subtitles in Japan. Dedicated fans added the subtitles in, they didn't 100% line up but they did the job.
