It seems like China played them. Used them to gain market value and presence then dumped them.

Those shows going to Netflix was a bad idea from the start. A lot of bad decisions were made in the early days. The China thing is a shot across Hollywood and American business.

His memo is all fluff. Give it a few years and the truth will come out.

www.vulture.com/2022/04/richard-linklater-dazed-and-confused-director-money.htmlDazed and ‘Screwed’: Richard Linklater Claims He ‘Didn’t Make Any Money’ Off Cult Classic Despite being a beloved movie, Linklater describes going through the true “Hollywood experience” when making the quotable film. He spoke to the Daily Beast about Dazed and Confused and revealed that he reportedly “didn’t make any money off” the film. When asked how it happened, Linklater responded, “I don’t know. Ask Universal! [Sigh] Hollywood accounting.” Isn't paying the staff suppose to be part of the movie budget? This is why no one outside of the studio has a clue what a movie makes.

Right the studio can make sure the movies make no profit on the books.
So from what he is saying Titanic did not make a profit.
But but it made X amount its budget.
hahahahahahah

I thought Cameron agreed to surrender his directing fee (several million dollars IIRC) on Titanic as part of a deal to keep the movie afloat? (no pun intended)
He definitely made money on the backend.
As for the WB/Discovery shake-up -- some executive turnover is to be expected with any merger/acquisition, but this number of executives is a little unusual from my understanding. Not gonna pretend to know the reason why it's happening.

The only way we would know for sure is if we got a look at all the books.

I think he is implying it did not hit the benchmark for trigger his payout.
Since no studio reports budgets, and there is no law in place for them to do so we will never know the true cost.
We know it went over budget. We have no idea how much. I am sure the budget does not include all the pay offs, and other shady things.
