Hmm, not overly excited for this one. Something about it seems really "off" to me

Yes, I am also struggling to like it. The Gene Wilder film was great, so it didn't really require a prequel. Although, the original books did allow for a sequel. So, I would have been way more interested to have seen a sequel to the Gene Wilder film that follows the sequel book, where Charlie is older etc, but keep the musical score and atmosphere of the Gene Wilder film, and probably throw in a CGI Gene Wilder cameo like Harold Ramis in Ghostbusters Afterlife.
But this.. you've got Hugh Grant playing an Oompa Loompa instead of an actual small person (but not Peter Dinklage, that asshole is way too entitled). That sums up this movie for me, it's a stupid idea that should have been done differently if attempted at all. And that is before I've even seen the final product. That and I'm not convinced that Timothee Chalamet is the amazing actor everyone assumed he would be from Dune, which was also a shit movie IMO. On top of that, this movie hasn't really got much source material (whereas a sequel does, because there is a book for it) so it's basically making stuff up.
Supposedly, this movie has intentional nods and references to the 1971 Gene Wilder version, so we are to assume Timothee is playing a young Gene Wilder, and I just don't think he is that good of an actor to even remotely pull that off. People speak highly of the actor and I just don't see it in any of his roles so far, what's the word I'm looking for.. overrated, that's the word.
But, having that all be said, it could turn out to be a decent film, it's just that the trailers have done little to nothing to pursuade me and the whole project just seems pointless with the decisions made in regards to it.
I am willing to give it a watch to be proven wrong, but it sure as hell won't be in the cinema, with my local cinema permanently closed I'm not travelling a long way out of my way using expensive fuel to go see a movie that I'm not all that bothered about seeing. If I see this, it will be digitally.

I have no idea where the hell people glazing this film online came from. No one gave a shit about it and now suddenly they're hyping this up.

I think they were trying to get a more book accurate Oompa Loompa, but following the Gene Wilder version kinda cancels that out. So yeah, can't really defend that Oompa Loompas are suppose to be smaller like in the books. As for a proper sequel, yeah, they never adapted that book for some reason. The Tim Burton version had elements to it, but not a proper adaptation.

January is not a good month for movie releases. Feb is a LITTLE better now than it was all those years ago, but still not much.

Alright, I am going to see this today. I honestly didn't think the trailers looked all that good, but a few people I know recommended this movie, plus as mentioned there's barely anything else out this month. I'm also going to revisit the 1971 original this morning, which I haven't seen probably since elementary school.

It was alright. I'm not in love with this movie like some people are, but it was a pleasant, enjoyable enough experience. The songs are generally fine, it has a decent story, a decent message, decent villains that aren't too memorable but they serve their purpose within the story. The movie is elevated by TimothΓ©e Chalamet's committed lead performance, I initially felt that he was miscast, but he does solid work portraying a naive, hopeful version of Wonka. There's some genuinely imaginative visuals, side characters that actually get some fair development, and quite a bit of heart at the center.
Still, there's a few bumps along the way, the humor is of the hit-or-miss variety, when it works, it does work, but when it doesn't, it lands with a big thud. The characters break into song a bit too many times for my liking, and some of those scenes can drag on. It feels very sanitized and safe, it lacks the cynical edge of the original films, though maybe that'll come into play in potential sequels. Also, the story tries to juggle a bit too much when it comes to worldbuilding and it can feel a bit convoluted.
All in all, I did have a decent time with this movie and I think it's worth checking out. 7/10
